Circular Tourism

Albania

Framework and Methodology

To drive the transition towards a more sustainable tourism industry, the project establishes a structured framework and methodology designed to equip VET educators and tourism SMEs with the necessary skills and knowledge. This approach is built on three key pillars: research, best practice integration, and tailored training solutions.

The first step involves analysing key challenges and opportunities in Albania’s tourism sector, identifying gaps in sustainability practices, and assessing the potential for circular economy integration. Drawing inspiration from successful European models, the project curates a set of practical tools and training resources that can be adapted to local needs.

A strong emphasis is placed on stakeholder collaboration, ensuring that the training programme is both relevant and impactful. By leveraging EU frameworks such as Green Comp and EQAVET, the project guarantees high-quality education that aligns with international sustainability standards. This dynamic and adaptable approach empowers businesses and educators to implement real change, fostering a greener, more resilient tourism ecosystem in Albania.

Mapping of key circular economy challenges (VET and SME perspective)

This activity identifies critical gaps in Albania’s tourism sector related to sustainability, resource efficiency, and circular economy adoption. A detailed analysis of environmental, economic, and regulatory barriers is conducted through research, stakeholder interviews, and case studies. The findings guide the development of training modules and ensure that project activities directly address local needs. The mapping also aligns Albania’s tourism strategies with EU sustainability standards.

Compilation of good practices

The project collects and documents best practices from European tourism destinations that have successfully implemented circular economy principles. These examples include strategies for waste reduction, energy efficiency, sustainable sourcing, and stakeholder collaboration. The compilation serves as a practical reference for VET educators and SMEs, demonstrating real-world applications of sustainability. The best practices are adapted to the Albanian context to ensure relevance and feasibility.

Framework for Capacity Building

The Capacity Building Framework provides a structured approach for training VET educators and SMEs on circular economy principles. It includes learning objectives, thematic modules, practical exercises, and assessment tools. The framework is based on EU sustainability frameworks (GreenComp, EntreComp) and is tailored to Albania’s tourism ecosystem. It ensures that training is practical, scalable, and aligned with industry needs, fostering long-term adoption of sustainable tourism practices.
